Mongolian Spots
Mongolian spots are congenital, benign hyperpigmentations that occur primarily in the African,
Asian, and Hispanic populations and only rarely in Caucasians. They occur in both sexes but with a slight male predominance and preferentially in the sacral area . They can also be found in the gluteal and lumbar region and on the thorax, abdomen, arms, legs, and shoulders. In most cases, mongolian spots show spontaneous regression during childhood, but persistence into adulthood has been described. Histologically, these macules consist of spindle-shaped melanocytes in the lower dermis that have failed to migrate to the dermal-epidermal junction during fetal life. Several cases are described with extensive Mongolian spots involving the trunk and extremities, associated with inborn errors of metabolism such as GM1 gangliosidosis and mucopolysaccharidosis
