Sebaceous Hyperplasia
Males are more commonly affected than females by sebaceous hyperplasia, a common tumor. Rare cases show a familial pattern. Sebaceous hyperplasia presents commonly as solitary or multiple, small (less than 3 mm in diameter), yellowish papules on the face, particularly on the forehead of middle-aged individuals. Lesions often reveal a central dell . Clinically, lesions are often suspected to be basal cell carcinomas. Unusual presentations of sebaceous hyperplasia include linear and zosteriform lesions, giant and diffuse tumors, and lesions confined to the areola or genital (vulva) region. Rhinophyma is currently widely considered to represent a special form of sebaceous hyperplasia.
Histologically, sebaceous hyperplasia reveals large mature sebaceous lobules clustered around discrete, often dilated, infundibula located mainly in the upper dermis. The infundibulum is sometimes filled with debris and bacteria, and may contain a vellus hair.A variety of treatment options exist including electrodesiccation, CO2 laser surgery, cryosurgery, and shave excision with curettage
