MUCOCELE MUCOUS
RETENTION CYSTS
Mucoceles are benign, painless, dome-shaped fluctuant papules, with a translucent bluish hue, that result from trauma or obstruction of the minor salivary gland ducts. Most mucoceles range in size from a few millimeters to more than 2 cm . They may rupture spontaneously and heal without intervention, although surgical excision may be required to treat persistent or recurrent lesions. Multiple mucoceles, a rare finding that may be mistaken for herpes simplex virus of the hard or soft palate, are seen in graft-versus-host disease, lichen planus (LP), and cicatricial pemphigoid . Ranula is a large, bluish, translucent fluctuant mass in the floor of the mouth due to obstruction of the submandibular and or sublingual duct. Despite its otherwise benign nature, the ranula may plunge through the mylohyoid muscle, into the neck, resulting in airway obstruction—a life-threatening emergency. Treatment consists of marsupialization; surgical removal or laser destruction of the affected glands. Diffuse parotid gland enlargement is noted in acute mononucleosis. In HIV infection, parotid gland enlargement due to cyst formation and infiltration with suppressor T cells is a sign of less aggressive disease
